AssertJ is a Java library that enables developers to create concise and readable test code. The power of AssertJ is shown by one of their nice examples on the docs page: assertThat(fellowshipOfTheRing).hasSize(9) .contains(frodo, sam) .doesNotContain(sauron); AssertJ has an extensive collection of assertions, making the possibilities almost endless. It is an alternative to JUnit’s own assertion module, offering clearer and more specific options. A nice example comes from the assertEquals, where AssertJ clarifies the positions of the expected / actual values:

It contains excellent documentation and support for any contributors that are willing to add to the project.

Bitwarden (https://bitwarden.com/) is one of the most trusted open source password managers for business. Bitwarden offers the easiest and safest way for teams and individuals to store and share sensitive data from any device. Bitwarden debuted in August 2016 with an initial release of mobile applications for iOS and Android, browser extensions for Chrome and Opera, and a web vault. The browser extension for Firefox was later launched in February 2017.

Cheat Engine is a tool for memory analysis and manipulation, for the purpose of modding and reverse engineering processes. It operates on one of the lowest possible levels of abstraction and gives real insight into the inner workings of other processes. Directly observing the behaviour of processes also allows for reverse engineering of secondary artifacts, such as encryption keys, file formats and communication protocols. This gives the user back the freedom to control the processes on their machine in the way they want.

Checkstyle is a development tool to help programmers write Java code that adheres to a coding standard. It automates the process of checking Java code to spare humans of this boring (but important) task. This makes it ideal for projects that want to enforce a coding standard.

Dolphin is a Nintendo GameCube and Wii emulator for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. It allows gamers to play GameCube and Wii games on modern hardware. Emulators like this play an important role in the long-term preservation of video game history, as they allow retro games to be played when the original hardware is not available anymore. Additionally, it offers nice improvements over the experience on original hardware, such as higher rendering resolution, remappable input, better framerate and stability, online multiplayer and support for HD textures, making these games even more accessible.

Figure: Egeria logo Egeria provides the Apache 2.0 licensed open metadata and governance type system, frameworks, APIs, event payloads and interchange protocols to enable tools, engines and platforms to exchange metadata in order to get the best value from data, whilst ensuring it is properly governed.

Element is a decentralized encrypted cross-platform communication app based on Matrix. The application looks a lot like Mattermost or Slack from the user’s perspective. However, it is decentralized and messages are encrypted. We chose the project since it has an active community and there is lots of work to do. In addition, some team members already used the app and found some issues. This inspired us to fix those issues.

Figure: Express logo. Express.js is a fast, minimalist and flexible backend framework for Node.js that provides a myriad of features for web and mobile application development. Express.js is released as free and open-source software under the MIT License. Being a Node.js module, it is entirely written in Javascript and is part of the “Javascript everywhere” philosophy that aims to unify backend and frontend of web development with a single programming language.

Ghidra is a free and open-source reverse engineering tool created and maintained by the National Security Agency (NSA). A big plus of Ghidra when you compare it to its competitors such as IDA (Pro) and Binay Ninja is that Ghidra is free and open source, whereas its competitors (ranging from configuration to configuration) cost between 200 and 10000 euros. Ghidra is mainly written in Java, but the decompiler component is written in C++.

Figure: Apache Log4j2 Logo Apache Log4j 2 is a Java-based logging framework and is widely used in software or components related to the java language. Log4j 2 is an upgrade to Log4j that has significant performance improvements, a new plugin system, and many improvements in configuration settings. Otherwise, Log4j 2 contains next-generation Asynchronous Loggers which perform 18 times higher throughput and orders of magnitude lower latency than Log4j 1.

Mattermost is an open-core team communication platform, similar to Slack and Microsoft Teams. Its usefulness has become particularly relevant due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent trend towards hybrid and remote working. It has raised more than $70 million from prominent venture capital funds to grow even quicker, but it also relies significantly on open-source contributors to build its products.

Mattermost (https://mattermost.com) is an open-source cross-platform solution for collaborative communication among teams. Offering security, flexibility, and various integrations with popular third-party services, Mattermost places itself as an open-source alternative to enterprise solutions like Slack and Microsoft Teams. While Mattermost is a self-hostable solution, Mattermost Inc., the company developing and maintaining the product, funds itself by offering professional support, managed hosting and additional features not included in the open-source version. Starting as a proprietary internal chat tool at SpinPunch game studios, it was later open-sourced, reaching the 1.

Metamask is the most popular in-browser crypto wallet and therefore a critical software package for the security millions of peoples funds. Available as a browser extension and as a mobile app, MetaMask equips you with a key vault, secure login, token wallet, and token exchange—everything you need to manage your digital assets. With the total crypto market cap growing above one Trillion dollars, wallets like these have become critical infrastructure of a new type of finance.

Moby is an open-source framework for creation of container-based solutions. It consists of multiple components, each of them tackling different aspects of container ecosystem. Through integration with container runtime like containerd, Moby provides an abstraction layer on top of the operating system’s process isolation capabilities. It also handles building the container images, creating virtual network stack, providing persistent storage bindings and more. Moby is used as the upstream for Docker, the widely known containerization solution.

Figure: Logo Netdata Netdata (https://www.netdata.cloud/) is an advanced high-fidelity infrastructure monitoring and troubleshooting tool, which collects more than thousands of metrics from systems, hardware, containers and applications without any form of configuration. Netdata will, upon installation, automatically detect hundreds of prebuilt integrations and make them visualizable and interoperable. Netdata was first released back in 2013 on the 24th of October, where it initially only supported a few integrations and systems.

PMD is an easy to use, extensible, multi-language static code analysis tool. It is intended to find and report common programming flaws, such as: Unused variables Empty catch blocks Unnecessary object creation Copy-pasted code PMD is designed to be integrated directly into a build process or continuous integration tools, acting as a automatic quality gate and enforcing code standards within a codebase. PMD provides plugins for several such tools, including Maven, Gradle, Ant, GitHub Actions, and Jenkins, as well as a standalone version for command-line usage.

Podman1 is a daemonless container engine for developing, managing, and running OCI Containers on your Linux System. Containers can either be run as root or in rootless mode. Simply put: alias docker=podman. The Open Container Initiative (OCI)2 is an open governance structure to create open industry standards around container formats and runtimes, which Podman follows. Podman can also create container pods that work together, resembling Kubernetes pods, which it can also make a compatible export for.

Prettier is an opinionated code formatter that supports many languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, JSX, Angular, Vue, Flow, CSS, Less, SCSS, HTML, JSON, GraphQL, Markdown, YAML and has plugins for many more. Prettier removes the old code styling and makes sure that the code follows a consistent style. Prettier helps the codebase having a consistent common style without programmers having to decide on all the style choices. Prettier is low overhead.

Quod Libet is a GTK+ based audio player written in Python. Compared to other players, Quod Libet places a special focus on tagging capabilities and scalability to very large music collections. Its well-documented development processes have helped it accumulate a large pool of active contributors. The software is feature-rich, and has a flourishing plugin ecosystem. This is made possible by the well-thought-out, modular structure of the project. Python is often relegated to smaller projects and simple scripts, but Quod Libet is a good demonstration of how the language can be applied to build larger programs without sacrificing usability and performance.

During this project, we will analyze the product react-native. React-native is a javascript development framework which can compile to both Android and IOs.

Figure: ReactJS React.js is a JavaScript based Framework that handles the view layer for web and mobile apps. It allows developers to create large applications that can change data, without reloading the page. React.js is declarative, allowing for designing simple views for each state in which react will efficiently update and render only the changed components. Declarative views make the code more predictable and easier to debug.

Robot Framework is a test automation framework. It is used for acceptance testing and test-driven development. It uses a keyword-driven testing strategy and features an easy-to-use tabular test data syntax. Test libraries written in Python or Java can enhance their testing capabilities, and users can generate new higher-level keywords from existing ones using the same syntax used for generating test cases. Robot Framework is independent of operating systems and applications.

Figure: Scrapy Scrapy is a free, open-source, high-level, Python library that allows for fast web scraping and web crawling. It can be used for a variety of tasks such as automated testing and other use cases that include extracting structured data from web pages. Scrapy is popular for both small and enterprise level developer teams wishing to crawl and scrape web-pages for use cases ranging from indexing to data analytics.

SerenityOS is a graphical Unix-like operating system for desktop computers! It is a love letter to the ’90s user interface with a custom Unix-like core. It flatters with sincerity by stealing beautiful ideas from various other systems. Figure: Serenity OS User Interface Why are you building SerenityOS? / What is your goal with SerenityOS? Andreas Kling: I started building SerenityOS to keep myself busy after finishing a 3-month drug addiction rehab program in 2018.

Snakemake is a workflow engine that provides a readable Python-based workflow definition language and a powerful execution environment that scales from single-core workstations to compute clusters without modifying the workflow. It is the first system to support the use of automatically inferred multiple named wildcards (or variables) in input and output filenames. The aim of Snakemake is to enable sustainable data analysis for scientific research. Snakemake is highly popular, with on average more than 6 new citations per week, and over 200k downloads (https://github.

Sonic Pi is a code-based music synthesizer which was developed by Software Programmer Sam Aaron. It is a open-source platform developed mainly by Ruby, and can be run on multiple mainstream operating systems such as Linux, maxOS and Windows. For reaching the goal of “easily use for everyone”, it does not only use clear use interface and provide simple instructions for beginners in coding or music creation, but also provide official community for the users to share their discussions.

Storybook is a development environment for UI components. Storybook eases front-end development by allowing fast prototyping through a quick and interactive process of developing front-end components and testing in isolation. It allows you to browse a component library, view the different states of each component, and interactively develop and test components. Storybook can be used in combination normal HTML but also with other popular web building frameworks such as React, Vue and Angular.

The Wikipedia Android App is the Android application for the well known online encyclopedia Wikipedia. It is known for being a completely free to access, collaborative project that is largely written by volunteers. The website is immensely popular, with 1.7 billion unique devices per month and 58 million articles available in over 300 different languages 1. 95% of the Android application is written in Kotlin, with the rest mostly being written in Java.

Wireshark is an open-source, cross-platform network packet analyser tool freely available. It is the most widely-used tool of its kind, with usage in both commercial and educational domains. The Wireshark project, which started under the name Ethereal, was created in the late 1997s by Gerald Combs who needed a tool for tracking down network problems and wanted to learn more about networking 1. Several people saw the potential of Ethereal and started contributing protocol dissectors and patches.
